Re: can anyone tell mewaht city fight club takes place?
Wed, March 10, 2004 - 7:32 AMnot sure where it is supposed to take place but i know it was filmed partly in LA. That abandoned house was built by some oil refineries in LA, they made it from scratch

Re: can anyone tell mewaht city fight club takes place?
Thu, March 18, 2004 - 11:52 PMchuck has said that the only completely invented thing in fight club are the actual "fight clubs". he got in a lotta fights during a period of his life, but there was no "fight club" in Portland (or anywhere else for that matter) BEFORE the movie came out. now, of course, fight clubs are everywhere... -

Re: can anyone tell mewaht city fight club takes place?
Fri, March 19, 2004 - 5:00 AMyep you are correct noah, the city in the movie is fictional, if you look closely at one scene ,i forget which one, there is a fictional zip code.....posted at his website..."Chuck was notorious for using an alter-ego "Nick" as his name when frequenting bars with his friends. Knowing in advance that he'd probably get into a brawl, he protected his real identity. That way, if he was seen saying his name was Nick... and people around him were calling him by the name... afterwards, when the bartender called the police to report Chuck... they'd have a fake lead and he'd get off scott-free. This fake name later became Tyler Durden."

Re: can anyone tell me what city fight club takes place?
Tue, March 23, 2004 - 6:02 PMI thought it both the book and movie were set in Wilmington DE but I don't remember what is the basis for me thinking that. That's where the credit card companies are all based, and I think the buildings they destroy were supposed to be those - in essence destroying the debt of much of America, the ultimate blow to the consumerism impulse. Whether there is something in the text or the film or maybe just something someone said in a commentary track on the DVD, I don't recall. -

Re: can anyone tell me what city fight club takes place?
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 9:13 PMBecause I'm a big fight club freak, I decided to go back to where "Jack" is looking at the Paper Street Soap Co card.
The address is 527 Paper Street * Bradford * 19808
19808 is the zipcode for Wilmington DE. According to the www.usps.com site about zipcodes this is also an acceptable zipcode for Marshallton.
However, there is no city named Bradford according to said site.
There is no Paper Street in Wilmington, however, there is a Paper Lane. But the zip codes associated with Paper Lane are all 19810.
The zipcode for Portland is 97223. So Mister Palahnuik's experience may have been in Portland, but Fight Club was not set there.
Despite all of this, I don't know for sure if this was coincidental, or intended. Mister Fincher probably thought no one would pause the DVD and get the zip code from the card. hehe.
Makes me want to walk around Wilmington though, just to see how it really looks.

Re: can anyone tell me what city fight club takes place?
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 12:01 AMAs a native to the area, Im going to guess he's talking about Wilmington, DE. In the scene where they're smashing headlights they mention that there are Fight Clubs starting up in Delaware City(DE), New Castle(DE), and Penns Grove(NJ). Im guessing that Mr. P looked at a map and picked Wilmington, because no one is from Delaware City or Penns Grove when you live in this area, they tend to just be spots on a map. If you were writing fiction about a house that is located in a toxic waste area I could'nt think of a better one than the city in which DuPont is headquartered. Anyhow, Delaware ain't that bad! -

Re: can anyone tell me what city fight club takes place?
Tue, April 15, 2008 - 10:54 AMDelaware has some of the best beaches.
Delaware ain't bad but Wilmington is another matter. I intentionally ran a red light there just so I wouldn't be a sitting target for the deranged man in the middle of the intersection attacking a rag (maybe a coat at one time) in one hand using the knife he held in the other. By contrast, brunch at the Dupont Hotel is kinda nice.
Ever drive from Wilmington to Chester off the expressways? There could be any number of Paper Streets in all those nearly forgotten places where dirt streets and blackened soil go down to meet the river.
Penns Grove (the NJTransit bus 423(?) goes from Wilmington across the Del Mem bridge to Penns Grove and Pennsville. You're right, I've never met anyone from either of those places but then, I very rarely meet anyone from Delaware, except at PHL.
I've got to watch that movie again. Funny that my ears didn't perk up when he mentioned those familiar places.
I know the Delaware Valley because I'm from Camden but I got the hell out when I could.
