Can I get a witness?

Have you guys read "Guts"? It's in the March issue of Playboy. I was skeptical about people REALLY passing out at Chuck's readings but then I read the story. This man is genius most high.

    in a word...
    yes.
I saw a guy get up and pass out at a Powell's reading here in Portland a few months ago.
I thought he was drunk....honestly, I was too into the story and how fucked up it was to see that he was struggling.
    so yeah.
    it's no joke.
    people freak out.

Yeah I was at that same Powells reading. He stood up and then sorta swayed and then pow he was down. People were propping his head with copies of Diary it was so great.
Speaking of great that story is amazing. I thought it was really funny and Chucks delivery was really good too!

I was at that reading too but somehow I didn't hear about anyone passing out until the next day when I read it in the paper.
But at the next reading he did in Tigard my boyfriend and I were sitting a few feet away from a girl that passed out, it was kind of creepy.

I haven't heard/read the piece yet, but have been reading about the passing out...I'm wondering if it's for real. Is it the content or how Chuck reads, or both? Very curious...

it has to do with both how he reads it and the content and the fact that people are allready feeling queasy as he tells them about people passing out. There was a link to a recorded version of him reading it, but im not sure where that is. It still isn't the same as being in the room with him reading it.

Kind of reminds me of that urban legend going around in the 90s about a Japanese video with subliminal images that when watched supposedly made people throw up...

No passing out, but Calimari will never taste the same again..

After reading all his novels and reading these posts, I was still a little skeptical about what he could have written to make someone actually pass out.

Then, I read "Guts" for the first time today. While eating breakfast (greaaat...), a friend of mine put it in front of me and told me to read it. I did, and the breakfast in front of me no longer seemed edible. Another friend reading it with me actually felt very nauseous and wanted to get up for air. He said it was the first peice of written work, besides erotica, to give him a strong physical reaction.

So, now, I am a believer. Well done Chuck. Yummy.

I was at a reading in San Diego where 6 people passed out. It was unbelievable. Chuck took a count after the reading, and said we tied with Milan, Italy. Also, I didn't see this, but I read that some jerk dumped a canister of 20 dead white mice out in front of him, in response to his comment that what breaks his heart is anything bad happening to animals.

I was at the Printer's Row Book Fair in Chicago when he was there. He read Guts... and two women passed out cold. I've seen it...

I guess i must have a stronger stomach than most women... I was standing the whole time [got to the tent too late for a chair], even wearing heels [I'm still not sure why], and never even swayed... yeah, it was gory... but hey, he read it like an absolute master of the craft, so it didn't seem really nasty-gross. BTW, it was also my first time ever hearing about the story. I hadn't read it, so I didn't know what to expect... but I felt fine the whole time.

    Yes, it does happen.
